Questions on the Days of the Rosary Mysteries

A question on when to pray which Mysteries

A question came in on which Mysteries to pray for Christmas Day, for example.  Should one pray the Luminous (since it fell on a Thursday in 2025), or the Joyful Mysteries, since it seems so appropriate for this holy day?  After all, the third Joyful Mystery, and the two preceding Mysteries are so intimately tied to this holy day.

The official answer is this: although there are suggested schema for praying the Rosary, depending on whether you choose to add the Luminous Mysteries to your weekly rotation, you may pray any set of Mysteries on any particular day.  The Rosary Confraternity simply asks it members to pray any three of the four sets of Mysteries per week.  This does not bind you to saying the Joyful Mysteries on a Monday, for example.

To me it seems very appropriate, for example, to pray either the Sorrowful or the Glorious Mysteries at someone's funeral or Rosary for their soul.  The Joyful Mysteries would seem out of touch or insensitive at such an occasion for the mourners.  Christmas seems a perfectly fine day to pray those Joyful Mysteries.  We focus, certainly, on the Nativity of the Lord at Mass and the Divine Office on Christmas Day, so why not incorporate the Rosary into it as well?

If I had my personal choice, I would move the Luminous Mysteries to Sundays in Ordinary Time, since the Gospels on Sundays focus so much on Our Lord's earthly ministry while He walked among us, and then keep the Joyful-Sorrowful-Glorious-Joyful-Sorrowful-Glorious pattern for the rest of the days of the week, Monday-Saturday.  Other good days to insert the Luminous Mysteries would be Holy Thursday, the Baptism of Our Lord, etc.

However, the Rosaries we record for our Youtube channel stick to the schedule suggested by Pope St. John Paul II, because so many go by that arrangement, and may be confused if I vary from that norm.

The most important thing is that we pray it, of course!  Our Lady wants to hear from you and pray with you.  What Mysteries you want to "talk about" on any particular day is not important.  Just pick up the rosary and "call!"
